What it is

Problem-solution fit is the stage where you have confirmed two things: there is a real, painful problem worth solving, and you have a solution that early users find genuinely valuable. It is a hypothesis that has survived contact with a small group of real customers. It is not yet the market's verdict, which is exactly what separates it from product-market fit.

Think of it as the milestone that comes right before PMF. You have earned the right to build for scale, but you have not yet proven the market will reward it. Skip this stage and you risk pouring months into scaling something only a handful of polite early users ever wanted.

Problem-solution fit is a promising conversation. Product-market fit is a signed contract.

When to use it

How to apply it

  1. Validate the problem is real and painful. Use Mom Test interviews, not opinions, to confirm the pain is sharp, frequent, and worth money.
  2. Confirm your solution actually solves it. Put a rough version in front of early users and watch behavior. Do they use it to make real progress, or just say nice things?
  3. Test willingness to pay or switch. A problem people will not pay to fix, or change their habits for, is not painful enough to build a company on.
  4. Look for pull, not push. Signal of fit: users asking for more, coming back unprompted, and telling colleagues without you nudging them.

Example

Two teams launch rough prototypes. Team A's early users open the product weekly, hit its limits, and start asking for specific features, that pull is problem-solution fit. Team B's polished demo gets universal praise, but almost nobody comes back a second time. Team B has applause; Team A has fit. Only one of them should be scaling.

Is it fit, or just enthusiasm?

Early enthusiasm feels like fit but rarely is. Run the Sean Ellis survey on your engaged users to see whether the pull is real enough to build on.

How it connects to your PMF score

Problem-solution fit is the green light to build for scale. Product-market fit, measured by the 40% Sean Ellis threshold, is the proof the market rewards it. They are two rungs of the same ladder, and confusing them costs founders years. The full breakdown is here: problem-solution fit vs product-market fit.
